Updates on the Operating Engineers Regulation
Nathan Fahey, Manager, Technical Safety Unit, Consumer Protection Ontario, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services

Nathan will give an overview of the Technical Safety Unit and discuss several topics of interest to Canadian Boiler Society members. In particular, he will provide updates on the Operating Engineers regulatory review and amendments to the Technical Standards and Safety Act under Bill 66. His talk will also touch on relevant aspects of the Auditor General’s 2018 report on the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

Nathan Fahey, Manager, Technical Safety Unit, Consumer Protection Ontario, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services

Nathan Fahey is the Manager of the Technical Safety Unit within the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services. He’s responsible for delivering on regulatory renewal projects under the Technical Standards and Safety Act and ministry oversight of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority.

Prior to joining the unit, Nathan worked in the Ministry of Energy’s Renewable Energy Facilitation Office as well as the Ontario Centres of Excellence for Energy.

Brian Gee, Technical Advisor, TSSA

Brian has been with TSSA for just over three years as the Operating Engineers Technical advisor. In his role, he provides expert advice to the operating engineers of Ontario, plant owners, plant designers and the TSSA OE Inspection Team.  In 1977, he entered into the Power Engineering profession in B.C. Since that time, he has worked in a wide range of plants ranging from hospitals, pulp and paper, food production and the steel industry across three jurisdictions.  He has instructed part-time for two colleges and is now the co-chair of the Program Advisory Committee for Conestoga Power Engineering Program.

Travis Hardin, Principle Engineer Manager, UL LLC

Travis has over 20 years of experience in HVACR product safety certification.  As UL's Primary Designated Engineer for commercial-industrial heating equipment and venting products, he provided technical analysis and support to the burner and boiler industries related to design and safety.  As a member of UL’s Standards Technical Panels 295 and 795, he has designed and developed test methods, procedures and specifications for the safety and performance evaluation of combustion equipment.

He served as Vice Chairman of the ASME CSD-1 Standards Committee for a term and has served as a member of the committee for approximately 15 years.  He currently is UL’s Principal Engineering Manager for HVACR, Controls, and Gas Appliances.

Paul Ingham,  Thermogenics Inc. 

Paul Ingham has 19 years’ experience at Thermogenics Inc. His current role includes product and territory expansion, sales team management, strategic initiatives and enhanced marketing. His background with Thermogenics includes; Welding, Fitting, Service, Production Control, Process optimization, Employee development, Product development and Market expansion. Paul has a degree in Construction Engineering Technology at George Brown College, Toronto ON.

Paul is a Gas Fitter I ticket holder and Welding Technologies Certification ticket holder.  Paul’s organization affiliations include: Canadian Boiler Society – Vice Chair and active member for past eight years; Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society – Industry Member; American Boiler Manufactures Association – Vice Chair, Commercial Group; Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Affairs – Policy Advisor.

Ron Polidori, Clayton Industries

Ron Polidori has been working in boiler sales and marketing for almost thirty years with two companies. He has represented CBS on various stakeholder committees such as CCME, BLIERS and TSSA expert panel.

Ron specializes in low volume water tube boilers (steam). His main goal is to help clients understand total cost of ownership and proposing a solution that offers reliability, lowest life cycle cost and single source responsibility.


Shaibaal Roy, Spirax Sarco Canada Ltd.

Shaibaal Roy, B. Eng is a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience in Steam and Condensate Systems. He has worked on a wide variety of steam applications involving trouble shooting, problem solving as well as energy conservation.

Shaibaal is a Certified Energy Manager as well as a USDOE Qualified Steam Specialist. He is currently employed with Spirax Sarco as Technical Director.


Pat Smith, Klenzoid Canada Inc.

A Klenzoid employee since 1992, Pat has decades of experience in the design, application, and results of effective water management programs and is a valuable industry resource. 
In his role as Service Manager, Pat manages the Established customer base, Training Program for Klenzoid Employees and is involved with the development and implementation of new Steam, Cooling, and Wastewater treatment programs, products, and processes.

Pat is an active member of AWT (Association of Water Technologies), CBS (Canadian Boiler Society), CHES (Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society). He is frequently invited as a guest speaker and regularly provides training seminars to industry related OEMs, Consultants, and Mechanical Contractors.

Aqeel Zaidi, EM.Sc., P.Eng., CEM, CMVP, Supervisor, Commercial/Industrial Technologies, Enbridge Gas Inc. 

Aqeel has over 35 years of professional engineering experience in the energy industry, primarily dealing with energy efficiency, demand side management, combined heat and power (CHP), energy auditing, boilers, steam plants, industrial process equipment, GHG emissions and emerging and renewable energy technologies.

Prior to joining Enbridge Gas Distribution in 2006, Aqeel held similar positions at Union Gas Limited, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and consulting engineering firms. Aqeel is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and has a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba, Canada.
